Maske’s Organic Gardening is a family-owned business that began in 1989. Founder Clifford Maske is a retired U.S. Navy veteran. Pride in service to our country has been carried over to providing the best customer service possible with the highest respect for all.

Clifford Maske and family with over 40 years of experience have helped to educate people in all walks of life. Victoria Maske-Mendenall is a graduate of SIU Carbondale and has been a part of the business for over 30 years.

As a company, we believe in achieving a high level of customer service to help our customers best achieve their goals. We have a wide variety of mulch and rock choices. We spend as much time needed with each customer to help them find the right product for their project. No job is too big or too small.

Over the years, Maske’s Organic Gardening has been recognized with numerous awards: The Herald & Review Reader’s Choice, Decatur Regional Chamber of Commerce 2011 Micro Small Business of the Year award.

Clifford Maske is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University and was selected by the University of Illinois-Champaign to be a part of the famed channel 12(WILL) Illinois Gardener Show for 12 years. He is also an author of the nationally published book, The 10-minute Garden.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

15 bags per cubic yard

How long does the color hold in Mulch?

Typically, our mulch will hold its color for about 4-5 months, including dyed mulch.

Is there any mulch that will last longer than another?

Cedar will last a little longer and if you stir it, you can get two years out of it if you want.

Is your mulch treated for bugs?

There is no such thing as treated mulch. If it where it would have to be in a bag with a caution label.

Does it matter which size rock I use?

The size of rock you use is a preference. The larger the rock the less likely it is to blow away if you use a blower to blow out leaves, clippings, etc.

If you have a steep area or one with a lot of water flow, we also recommend using the larger version or at least one inch or greater stone.

At what depth should I put my landscape gravel/stone?

We recommend 2-3 inches for landscaping. If you purchase a rock that is 2 inches you will need to put it 3 inches deep.

When I first put mulch in how deep should it be?

The ideal depth for mulch is 3-4 inches.

If I top off my mulch every year how much should I add each year?

About 1 inch is good.

Do I need to add anything to the composted soil?

You can use our composted soil just the way it comes.

It is an organic soil and will already have the nutrients your plants need at a slow-release rate.
